The speaking test is an interview which assesses how well you can communicate in spoken English. It is a test of general speaking skills and is broadly the same for all candidates.

Duration and Format

IELTS Speaking Structure

Part 1: Introduction & Interview
4-5 minutes
The examiner will ask easy questions on familiar topics: your name, identification, hometown, what do you do + 2other topics: family, learning English hobbies, food preference, daily routine, traditions, travelling etc.
Part 2: Mononlogue
3-4 minutes
You will be given a card and asked to talk for 1-2 minutes on a topic written there. You will be given 1 minute to prepare. Then you will have to speak without stoping
Part 3:Two-way discussion
4-5 minutes
You will be asked more abstract questions, broadly linked to the topic in part 2. You should show your ability to express abstract ideas and support your opinions, give longer replies than in part 1

The speaking test is marked out of 9 bands according to the following criteria: Fluency and Coherence, Vocabulary, Grammar and Accuracy, and Pronunciation.
